Pickleball kit for beginners: what to buy first
Share
Starting to play pickleball is cheap compared with other sports. This is the list of what you really need, in order, and what it isn't worth spending on yet.
The essentials
- A paddle. To start, a mid-range one: you don't need the most expensive. We help you in how to choose a paddle. If you want a set for two with a bag and balls, look at the ACE LED paddle in its 2-paddle version.
- Balls. Outdoor if you play outside, indoor if it's a covered court. See the differences.
- Court shoes with good lateral grip. We explain in pickleball shoes.
- Comfortable clothes and a water bottle.
What's worth adding soon
- Insoles if you notice aches in your feet after playing.
- A cover or a backpack to carry the paddle without scratching it.
- The SCOOP ball pickup tool if bending down tires you.
Indicative budget
| Level | What it includes |
|---|---|
| Minimum | Mid-range paddle, 3-4 balls, court shoes you already have |
| Comfortable | The above, plus a cover or backpack and insoles |
| Complete | The above, plus support depending on what you need and a ball pickup tool |
Prices of paddles and shoes vary a lot by brand; those of our accessories are in the shop.
What not to spend on at first
- A high-end paddle before knowing how you play.
- A full set of supports "just in case." Buy the one that solves something specific.
- Fashion accessories nobody uses on court.
