How much does it cost to start playing pickleball?
Share
Starting pickleball is cheaper than it seems. Almost everything you need fits in a bag and you don't have to buy it all on day one.
The essentials
- Paddles. One per person. If you start with another person, the normal thing is to buy a set of two.
- Balls. For an outdoor court, outdoor balls; for a gym, indoor. We explain in indoor and outdoor balls.
- Court shoes. Shoes with a flat sole and good lateral grip. Running shoes don't work well because they don't support on changes of direction. If you already have padel or tennis shoes, start with them.
With that you can play. An example: the ACE LED paddle in its 2-paddle version includes a bag and four balls, so the cost is split between two people.
What you can leave for later
- A better paddle. Until you know what you're missing, it isn't worth it.
- Technical clothing. Any comfortable sportswear works.
- Supports. Insoles, sleeve, knee support or ankle support are useful if you play often and have specific aches. See which you need in ankle support, knee support or elbow sleeve.
Small things that are appreciated
- A paddle cover, to carry it without scratching it.
- A handle ball pickup tool if you're tired of bending down for balls.
And the court?
It depends on where you live. Many sports centers and clubs have pickleball courts or painted lines on tennis or padel courts, and the price changes a lot from place to place. Ask at yours before buying anything. The rules are learned in a couple of matches.
Frequently asked questions
What do I need to start playing pickleball?
One paddle per person, balls and court shoes. With that you can play from day one.
Is it an expensive sport?
No. Starting with two people can be inexpensive if you buy a set. The big spending, if it comes, comes later, when you want a better paddle.
Can I play in running shoes?
Better not. Running shoes don't support well in lateral movement. Court, padel or tennis shoes are a safer option.
